About Guster
Guster, formed at Tufts University near Boston in 1992, continues to bring their catchy indie pop melodies and their distinctive percussion hand-drumming to fans everywhere. One refrain that Guster has heard repeatedly throughout their years of successful musical experimentation and wild exploits is…“but you can’t do that!” — however Guster prides themselves on not subscribing to the same musical ideology as critics, never have and never will. Guster’s plan has always been simple. Grow their musical community. Write better and better songs. Keep their minds open. Never repeat themselves and create a legacy of music that is undeniable.

About The Wood Brothers

The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades, they’ve cemented their reputation as free-thinking songwriters, road warriors and community builders, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart, but the head and hips, too.
Throughout Heart Is The Hero, those performances are matched by the visceral storytelling and songwriting chops that have turned The Wood Brothers into Grammy-nominated leaders of American roots music, even as their music reaches far beyond the genre’s borders. The stripped-down swagger of “Pilgrim” underscores Oliver’s reminder to slow down and experience each moment as an interactive observer, rather than a passive tourist. A similar theme anchors “Between the Beats,” where Oliver draws upon a meditation technique — maintaining one’s focus on the space between heartbeats — to reach a new level of presence. The gentle sway of country soul gem “Rollin’ On,” featuring horns by Matt Glassmeyer and Roy Agee, expounds on the time-honored tradition of love as the guiding light through darkness, while ”Mean Man World” finds Chris Wood singing about his responsibilities as a father whose young daughter is poised to inherit an uncertain future. “Line Those Pockets” is a universal call for mercy and understanding over materialism. “Everybody’s just trying to be happy, so put your money away; line those pockets with grace,” the band sings in three-part harmony during the song’s chorus, which emphasizes compassion over cash as the world’s true currency. Together, these songs offer a snapshot of a spirited, independent-minded group at the peak of its powers, always pushing forward and seeking to evolve beyond what’s come before.
“There’s still acoustic guitar, upright bass, and percussion on this album — things people use all the time — but we’re always thinking, ‘How can we make this sound like us, but not like something we’ve already done?'” Oliver says. “Sometimes, the only way to do that is to get weird.”

That sense of exploration pumps its way through Heart is the Hero like lifeblood. Arriving on the heels of 2019’s Live at The Fillmore, 2020’s Kingdom In My Mind, and Oliver Wood’s solo album Always Smilin’ — all of which were released on Honey Jar Records, the band’s independent label — Heart is the Hero is bold, bright, and singularly creative, a fully realized collective effort ultimately greater than the sum of its parts. Perhaps that’s to be expected from a group whose willingness to experiment has earned acclaim from Rolling Stone and NPR, as well as an annual touring schedule of soldout music halls and theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. Ask The Wood Brothers, though, and they’ll tell you to expect the unexpected.

We are never satisfied if we are not searching for new musical recipes,” says Jano Rix, nodding to the uncharted territory that Heart is the Hero covers. Chris Wood agrees, adding, We are one of those bands that isn’t easily categorized. We know what our strengths are, but we can’t help but push the envelope, as well. It’s too much fun.”

About Shovels & Rope

It has been more than ten years since Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent released their debut album O’ Be Joyful, and that decade has seen the release of six full-length albums, three collaborative covers albums (Busted Jukebox Volumes 1-3), a curated music festival in their hometown of Charleston, SC (High Water), a musical film (Shovels & Rope: The Movie) and countless dynamic live performances all over the planet.

Harbor & Home is a Minneapolis-based rock band directed by lead singer Kaleb Williams. Described as having a “classic, emotionally gratifying sound that [transcends] time and place,” their music is a blend of roots Americana and classic rock n’ roll.

The band released their debut album, Dark Days, in 2014, and their fan favorite record “Summer Lover” has more than 9 million streams on Spotify. They’re known for their organic instruments and raw vocals — no frills, no tricks.

Harbor & Home’s latest EP, Change, presents the band’s shift toward country, with lyrics that hold deep and honest reflections about life and loss. Alyce Lindberg of Rising Artists writes, “You’ll be drawn in by the catchy melodies and organic feel, then stay for the gritty, emotive vocals.”

Amanda Grace
Amanda does not claim a particular genre of music, and in doing so enjoys variety in her music and audiences. She has produced music drifting between folk, alt-pop/rock and Americana. With roots as a pianist her writing is thematically varied with an emphasis on melody and ballads wrapped in warm vocals. She’s released 7 albums. In 2016 she received a “Front Of Line” pass from The Voice. She continues to fully enjoy songwriting, releasing & performing original music in the beautiful Mississippi river valley.

After attending Winona State University she began a more intentional look at returning to music after her nephew was diagnosed with leukemia and she was pulled into his struggle. Bryce asked her to sing to him at the moment he passed away. That was her defining moment in her mind to open herself again to writing and performing. In 2010 she released a children's album inspired by his memories called, "Trains, Cars + A Trip To Mars." Soon after his father also passed away from a sudden brain aneurysm. Amanda wrote some songs from the experience and released, "Embrace" in 2012.

After a successful kickstarter project, she released her first EP called, "Keeping Hearts" in June 2014. That month she appeared at Ed's No Name bar in Winona with her group Wildflower as the release event.

"Better Life" EP was released in December of 2017 with full length alternative “Rayne Angel” released in November of 2018. Rayne Angel is a flavorful and diverse full length alternative based album, and a truly Minnesota made album; all of the album captured in her own home. Recorded & produced by Fletch Archerd & Amanda Grace.

Her seventh album, “Please Dear Sun” was released in July of 2021 and is her most distinctly dissimilar album yet. The album focuses on humanity’s struggle with real and imagined, physical and mental confinement, as a result of the pandemic in 2020. The album was recorded in her home with Fletch Archerd (bassist/bandmate) and tracks mastered by Mike Milchener.

Amanda loves performing for all ages and on all sized stages. She joined The Mid West Music Festival at its inception. In 2015 and in 2018, she performed on the first day of the Wisconsin music and art festival, Ashley for the Arts. Wildflower joined the Boats & Bluegrass Festival in 2017 and her band played for Big Turn Festival. In 2019, her band performed at Big River Theater, Red Wing Arts Festival, and She Rocks Festival. With the great changes in the live music industry with Covid-19, she worked to move her music services online for a time and joined forces with Land Of 10,000 Streams Festival in 2020. Since then, her band has performed at the Historic Paramount Theatre, Hopkins Center For The Arts, the Historic Chateau Theatre of Rochester, and the Landmark Center in St Paul.

Amanda is supported onstage with many outstanding midwest musicians including: Jim Trouten, Amber Fletcher, Peter Boysen, Fletch Archerd, Jake Allen, Jeff Perry, Bob Johnston, John Della-Selva, Dave Casey + more.

Say No More, Mon Amour..

On this fateful day back in 1995, Rex Manning visited the independent record store Empire Records much to the employee's indifference, who dubbed it "Rex Manning Day."

If you're not familiar with the 1995 coming-of-age dramedy Empire Records, all the people celebrating this obscure 80's pop icon may be surprising. The Allan Moyle-directed film follows the trials and tribulations of record store employees over the course of a day. That day was April 8.

Manning is a fictional 80's pop icon due to visit the titular record store to sign autographs to promote his latest album in the film. His latest single is "Say No More (Mon Amour)," a synth-driven 80's sounding pop-rock song.

Join us as we celebrate the washed-up pop star (and the film Empire Records) with record vendors, 90s music, and 90s trivia by Trivia Mafia.

A Brief History of Beer Poking

Beer poking is an age-old tradition which dates back more than 400 years ago. It was quite popular in the colonial era where a combination of heat and alcohol was preferred during the cold winters. When Colonial Americans were sitting by the campfires in winter, they had discovered that a fire poker, which looks like a short rod, can be used to warm up their beers.

In Europe, the process of beer poking is a heritage and usually takes place in early Spring when the bock beers hit the shelves. During the winter, people gather around bonfire for a warm beer poking session. It is a common sight in Northern Europe. It is known as ‘Bier Stacheln’ which translates to beer spiking in Germany.

Bierstacheln
The “Bierstacheln“ tradition has a historical background. Back in the day, beer was often too cold to drink directly in the winter months. Apparently, it was the blacksmiths who had come up with the idea to stir the beer with a poker and heat the beer to drinking temperature. Today, the entire process is more hygienic with purposefully made spikes. Bier Stacheln, pronounced as “beer shta-hll”, is a tiny metal stick that is heated to about 600°C and immersed into the beer for a few seconds.

So, what exactly happens when a hot metal rod is plunged into the beer? As we all know, post fermentation, there are residual malt sugars which are leftover in the beer. The hot metal rod instantaneously caramelizes these complex sugars and brings out more concentrated malt character to the forefront. Post this, the beer is no longer cold but develops a marshmallow-like toasted character and is pleasantly soft/creamy on the palate.

Recommended Beer Styles For Hot Poker
Hot beer poker only works best with the beer styles that are malt forward. Malty rich styles such as Doppelbock, Belgian Dark Strong Ale etc., would serve to be an ideal choice. While you’re at it, It is recommended to not dip the stick for more than 4-5 seconds as it will drive-off the remaining carbon dioxide and make the beer flat and foamy. Stir slowly and smoothly in a circular motion and avoid aggressive strokes.

Drinking a foamy and warm beer may sound unusual but it’s a delightful experience which has been there since ages. Hot poker beer definitely serves up as a dessert after a hearty meal.
